About the Book

Award-winning historian Paula Mitchell Marks reconfirms her status as one of the foremost contemporary chroniclers of the American West with this harrowing, masterfully told account of American Indian cultures under siege from 1607 to the present. With In a Barren Land, Marks presents the first comprehensive account of how the United States government and white settlers collaborated to seize land from Native Americans.

Covering all parts of the country, Marks reveals how America’s original inhabitants were stripped of both their land and their way of life by a series of broken promises and bloody persecutions.

In a Barren Land is a landmark work of history that also offers the reader fresh perspectives on contemporary issues of Native American culture, rights, and land.

Paula Mitchell Marks is a major historian of the American West whose books have dealt with the American expansion story. She has a Ph.D. in American civilization from the University of Texas, and is associate dean of the New College program and associate professor of American studies at St. Edward’s University in Austin. Her books include Precious Dust: The American Gold Rush Era, 1848-1900, and Hands to the Spindle. She lives with her family in Buda, Texas.

“Compellingly readable ... there is no better one-volume history of Native American dispossession found anywhere.” — Washington Post Book World
